DWPI: New Patent Numbering Formats and Patent Kind Codes for Taiwan

21. October 2014

In Derwent World Patents Index the patent numbering format for Taiwanese granted patents and utility models published from August 2004 (new patent law) has been changed. The affected numbers include a letter before the patent number which is I for granted patents (examined patent applications) and M for utility models.

In addition, the patent kind code for granted patents (old law) has been changed from A to B and for granted patents (new law) from B1 to B. The patent kind code for old law utility models has changed from U1 to U.

Granted patents (new law): TWI240164 B 20050921
Granted patents (old law): TW199097 B 19930201
Utility Models (new law): TWM280006 U 20051101

The Taiwanese patent numbers and kind codes are now consistent across the big three family databases on STN: INPADOC, CAplus and DWPI. The new format avoids number clashes and guarantees a reliable transfer of patent numbers (PN) and patent numbers with kind code (PNK).

Customers whose current awareness alerts (SDIs) or saved queries include TW patent numbers should update them to ensure continued retrieval.
