Surge in US Patent Publications in Coming Weeks

15. September 2014

The America Invents Act from 2011 impacted US patent law in a number of ways. Of particular interest at this time is the upcoming 18 month anniversary of the introduction of the first-inventor-to-file provision, which went into effect on March 16, 2013. Approximately 30,000 US patent applications were filed that day five times as many as in a normal week. Those applications are eligible to be published on September 18, 2014. STN customers should be aware of the unusually large amount of US patent application data that will become available in a number of STN databases over the next 4 to 6 weeks, depending on indexing and updating procedures. Classic and new STN databases affected are: CAplus, Derwent WPI, IFIALL (classic STN), INPADOC, USPATFULL/USPAT2 (classic STN) and USFULL (new STN).
