STN adds Japanese patent full text file – JPFULL

29. October 2012

As of October 28, 2012, JPFULL adds the full-text of Japanese patent applications, granted patents, and utility models to STN. The Japan Patent Office published the highest number of patent applications and utility models of all authorities. In recent years, about 350,000 applications were filed annually.

The records of the database contain bibliographic data including patent applicant, inventor, and patent assignee number, patent number, application, priority, and related (PCT and JP parent) application data, IPC, CPC, EPC, and ICO classification codes, abstract, and the full text of descriptions and claims. Records are available about ten days after publication with the complete content.

Abstracts are either machine translated or taken from equivalent documents if available. Machine translated abstracts of documents with kind code A are replaced by human translated text from JAPIO about three months later. Titles are machine translated, which are in case of kind code A documents replaced by human translations from JAPIO about three month later as well. Descriptions and claims are always machine translated. Additionally, the following fields are displayed in Japanese characters: title (/TIJA), patent applicant(s) (/PAJA), and inventor(s) (/INJA). However, these fields are not searchable. The patent assignee number (/PAN) is allocated by the JPO.

Each database record contains all documents published for one application, displayed in order of appearance. Legal status data, patent and non-patent citations, and family display formats from the INPADOCDB database are available, too. Online thesauri for the International Patent Classification (/IPC), Cooperative Patent Classification (/CPC) and European Patent Classification (/EPC and /ICO) are searchable. Numeric values of 55 physical and chemical properties (/PHP) in about 1800 unit variants are searchable in all full text fields.

The JPFULL file contains currently over 4 million records from application year 2001 onwards.

Some of the full text has been created by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Therefore, characters may be misinterpreted, or portions of the text may be incomplete. Automatic current awareness searches (SDIs) may be run weekly (default) or monthly.

For additional information about this new database, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet or STNGuide (=> S JPFULL/DBN).
