STN is an online database service that provides global access to published research, journal literature, patents, structures, sequences, properties, and other data.
With STN, find precisely the patent and sci-tech information needed to make business-critical decisions:
STN is operated jointly by CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe worldwide and is represented in Japan by JAICI.

Did you know that more than 20 eco-unfriendly processing steps go into a traditional pair of pre-washed jeans? During the last decade, many denim manufacturers have begun changing the environmental hazards of their processing by recycling their wastes and greening their production steps. With STN®, we will investigate some of the new green trends in denim manufacturing. |
Innovative feature for professional searches: Derwent World Patents Index® with numeric property search feature
An enhanced version of Derwent World Patents Index® is now available. For the first time, the new implementation of DWPI on STN offers the patent information searcher a unique numeric property search feature that allows for searching the numeric values of 55 physical and chemical properties, found in the English text of all documents. Searchable properties and their respective base units comprise data like /SAR (Surface Area, m²), /CMOL (Molarity, Molar Concentration, mol/L), /DEN (Density, Mass Concentration, kg/m³), /MFR (Mass Flow Rate, Kg/s), /MM (Molar Mass, Molecular Weight, g/mol), /VOL (Volume, m³) and many more. The system will recognize 60 base units with 1,700 variants.
A search employing numerical property field codes will now be covering data from all fields comprising text in English language. A search for a physical property value will not only find hits in the text showing the exact value but will also include hits where the value is part of a given range (e.g. => s 10/cmol will find "at least 0.008 mol/l" or => s 45/deg will find "0 to 80 degrees"). Open ranges encountered in the database like ‘less than 100 degrees’ have been indexed as well and are routinely searched through. A search for a temperature in Kelvin units will also retrieve documents with the corresponding value (ranges) in Degrees Celsius or Degrees Fahrenheit units.
New on STN - CNFULL (Chinese patent full-text database)
CNFULL (Chinese patents full-text database) is now available on STN, providing English language full-text of patent applications, granted patents and utility models published by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
At present, the file comprises over 4.5 million records and more than 3.8 million images from 1985 onwards. About 10,000 new documents enter the file each week. The records of the database contain bibliographic data including patent applicant, inventor, patent number, application, priority, and related (PCT) application data, IPC and EPC classification codes, abstract and the full text of descriptions and claims.
CNFULL features the powerful STN Numeric Property Search (NPS) feature, which is also available in PCTFULL, CANPATFULL and AUPATFULL.

Update on New STN®
In October 2011, the STN partners announced that a completely new STN would be phased into the market beginning in 2012. This initiative was to start with an alpha release at the end of 2011, followed by continued customer consultation and product development.
We are pleased to confirm that we are on track with this plan.
An alpha release was provided to the STN Advisory Council members in December 2011, and has been used to date by nearly 100 patent search professionals. They have confirmed that the new platform provides important advances while retaining the value of STN and aligning with the workflow of patent experts.
An enhanced alpha version will be available by June. At that time, we will expand availability to additional customers who have requested early access to the new platform.
Release of a beta version of the new platform to all STN fixed-fee customers is on track for the fourth quarter of 2012.
The new platform offers improved efficiency and usability at the expert level and is particularly useful for patent search professionals.
Powerful new elements will include:
The current STN system, including STN Express and STN on the Web, will continue to be available and fully supported throughout the development of the new platform.
