Patent Forum Summer 2006

  • What's New on STN?
Keep your searching skills and patent database knowledge up-to-date. This session will focus on the very latest news on STN interfaces and patent databases, including CAPLUS, REGISTRY, MARPAT, Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) and The USPTO Genetic Sequence Database (USGENE).
  • The "Complete" Markush Search
MARPAT has been enhanced with approximately 40,000 additional records back to the 1970s, with more records to be added later in 2006. This session will focus on running a comprehensive generic structure search for patents on STN. In addition, the latest version of STN Express allows searching on the Merged Markush Service (MMS), hosted on Questel.Orbit. Techniques for bringing answers from MMS back to STN for family sorting and de-duplication with STN answers will be shown.
  • Effective Multifile Searching for Patent Prior Art
While it's necessary to include DWPI and CAS files for any prior art search, it is often necessary to extend your search to other STN files for more comprehensive results. Explore the reasons for adding additional files to your search, including JAPIO, KOREAPAT, RUSSIAPAT, COMPENDEX and INSPEC (with its new archive dating back to 1898).
  • Is that Patent Still Valid? Finding Information on Patent Expirations and Extensions on STN
There are several legal status events that alter the normal term of a patent document. Discover where to find information on anticipated expiration dates, and learn techniques for determining the current legal status in STN patent databases. Find sources for information on extensions, which delay the normal expiration date, and identify legal status events that have shortened the normal term.
