CAplus: Value-Added Indexing Improves Access to World Traditional Medicine Patents
Now you can locate answers to your research questions more quickly and easily when you search the archive of 50,000 unique World Traditional Medicine (WTM) patents offered by CAplus. Newly added index terms, including CAS Registry Numbers and roles, provide many additional points of access that you can use to rapidly zero in on the information you need.
The CAplus WTM patent collection is a body of novel scientific literature especially intriguing to pharmaceutical and consumer products industries worldwide. See article entitled "CAplus - 50,000 World Traditional Medicine (WTM) patents now available" published in STNewsline April 2010.
Previously, the only indexing available for these WTM patents consisted of keyword terms in the ST (Supplementary Terms) field. The ST field typically contains the Latin names of plants and animals used in creating the reparations and remedies documented in these patents.
The recent addition of this enhanced indexing gives you many more avenues to follow when exploring the unusual content of the WTM patent collection.
To identify WTM patents enhanced with value-added indexing, look for the terms "nosection" and/or "nonindexed" in the custom display field File Segment (FS).
To see an example of a WTM patent with enhanced indexing, visit

For additional information about CAplus, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
ReaxysFile available on STN
On December 18, 2010, the database ReaxysFile produced by Elsevier became available on STN.
The chemical database ReaxysFile includes substances and reactions, with the data and references shown together in one record. For details about minor changes of field qualifiers please enter HELP CHANGE at an arrow prompt when in the ReaxysFile.
For additional information about ReaxysFile, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX: Manual Code Thesaurus reflects 2011 revision
The DWPI manual code thesaurus has been updated reflecting the changes according to the Thomson Reuters 2011 manual code revision.

Higher System Limits Increase the Power of STN Substance-Based Searching
Substance searchers on STN now have vastly enhanced searching power due to a recent increase in search limits in the CAS databases. The increased limits provide greater flexibility and efficiency in the substance-search processes.
The iteration and answer limits for CAS REGISTRY structure searching are increasing from
- 2 million to 6 million for online searches
- 3 million to 8 million for batch searches
The current accession number crossover limit from MARPAT to and from the CA/CAplus databases is doubling from 50,000 to 100,000.
The increase in system limits will permit broader REGISTRY structure searches to run to completion, increasing search power and efficiency. Enhanced crossover limits allow increased flexibility as searchers move between key STN data sources.
For additional information about these databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
New PNK field allows more precise crossover among STN patent databases
To provide more precise patent publication number crossovers, STN has introduced the PNK (Patent Number/Kind Code) field for use when transferring patent publication numbers between databases. PNK field crossovers can be used to transfer patent answer sets. A new PNK.B (Patent Number/Kind Code of the Basic Patent) field also has been implemented in CASM/CAplusSM and is expected to be implemented soon in the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPISM).
PNK has also been added to these databases:
EPFULL, FRFULL, GBFULL, IFIPAT/IFICDB/IFIUDB, IMSPATENTS, INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB, PATDPAFULL, PCTFULL, TOXCENTER, TULSA/TULSA2, USPATFULL/USPAT2/USPATOLD.
PNK is available for SEARCH, DISPLAY, SELECT, and ANALYZE.
The PNK field is necessary because some patent-granting authorities use the same numbering schemes for both patent applications and granted patents, or for both patents and utility models. This causes searching difficulties for customers crossing over patent publication numbers, particularly when Japanese, Chinese, and Taiwanese patents were involved.
When you need to transfer patent publication numbers from one database to another, the PNK field will enable you to transfer them precisely. Just use TRANSFER PNK rather than TRANSFER PN to achieve better quality results.

Join STN at the IPI-ConfEx 2011 – Special discount for STN customers
We'd like to invite you to join STN at the 2011 IPI-ConfEx where we will be featuring our products and services in the Exhibition Hall. Robert Austin, STN European Training Manager, will conduct a workshop on "Searching patent office classifications on STN". This workshop focuses on making efficient use of the wealth of patent classification systems available in STN patent databases, including the Derwent World Patent Index (DWPI), CAplus and INPAFAMDB. Learn how to refine or expand your STN search strategies for optimum results, using International (IPC), European (ECLA), U.S. (NCL) and Japanese (FI, F-Term) classification systems.
The 8th annual IPI-ConfEx, Conference and Exhibition, takes place at the Hotel Barcelo Renacimiento in Seville, Spain, 6-9 March 2011. The conference format provides a wealth of learning opportunities by mixing plenary sessions with tutorials, workshops, discussion groups, vendor exhibits, poster sessions and informal gatherings. Network with colleagues and hear from industry's leading information professionals at the IPI-ConfEx - the premier forum in Europe focused on the training and continuing education of patent information professionals.
