Database News

CA/CAplus enhancements: Kind code changes for Chinese patents; new formats for Taiwanese application numbers in CA/CAplus

Kind code changes for Chinese patents
Chinese utility models with a publication date of October 6, 2010 or later will now use kind code U in the CA/CAplus family of databases. The kind codes for Chinese utility patents with publication dates of April 7, 2010 thru October 5, 2010 will be updated from Y to U. These changes impact both basic patents and equivalents, will make crossover searching easier, and will save you time by ensuring kind-code consistency among CA/CAplus and other STN databases.

New formats for Taiwanese application numbers in CA/CAplus
The formats of Taiwanese patent application numbers (/AP) and priority application numbers (/PRN) have changed in the CA/CAplus databases to be consistent with other STN databases. These changes ensure that you will receive a complete set of records when you cross over patent application numbers among several STN databases.

The new formats will be applied to new Taiwanese applications and CA/CAplus backfile records, and differ from previous formats by the deletion of the first two characters (that corresponded to the Taiwanese year) immediately following the dash:

Previous format:  TW 2005-94114837
New format: TW 2005 -114837

For additional information about MEDLINE, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.

Precision of EMBASE searching enhanced with new chemical name field

A new Chemical Name Search field (/CNS) in EMBASE has been introduced to increase retrieval precision for chemical names. This new /CNS field operates across the entire EMBASE database to retrieve names indexed in the Chemical Name (/CN) and the CAS Registry Number (/RN) fields.
The /CNS field has SLART and proximity capabilities, and its chemical names are parsed on spaces and on non-alphabetic characters. For example, the chemical name 9-(3-Deoxy-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)adenine is parsed as

  • 9
  • 3
  • Deoxy
  • beta
  • D
  • ribofuranosyl
  • adenine

Dimethyl sulfone appears in the /RN field as dimethyl sulfone and can be retrieved in the /CNS field by searching the parsed entities

  • dimethyl
  • sulfone

Glyco flex iii appears in the /CN field and can be retrieved in the /CNS field by searching

  • glycol
  • flex
  • iii

For additional information about EMBASE, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet or STNGuide.

INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB: Enhancements to the US national patent classification; promotional offer

Enhancements to the US national patent classification
The issued US national patent classification (NCL) is available for 6 million US applications in the INPADOC databases back to 1968. The NCL codes have now been standardized according to STN-standard rules and a NCL-thesaurus has been introduced to support patent classification searching. In addition, the Locarno classification for US design patents (US S1) is provided in separate search and display fields. The US classification enhancements greatly support the retrieval of US patent publications in the INPADOC files.

Promotional offer
To show the superior quality of the INPADOC files INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB on STN, FIZ Karlsruhe is offering to STN customers and interests a promotional offer for setting up SDIs free and receiving SDI results free of charge for a month. Search requests need to be at FIZ Karlsruhe until December 15, 2010.

After the test period of one month the profiles (SDIs) will be transferred to your STN login ID at no charge unless you object via e-mail to the Help Desk at FIZ Karlsruhe helpdesk(at)fiz-karlsruhe(dot)de no later than January 10, 2011.

If you want to participate in this program please fill out the order form or contact the STN Help Desk.

For additional information about these databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets.

Take Note

Selected STN® databases scheduled for removal on December 31, 2010

The following databases will be removed from STN on December 31, 2010:

ABI-INFORM, AQUIRE, CSCHEM, CSCORP, DRUGMONOG, DRUGMONOG2, HSDB, IMSCOPROFILE, IMDRUGNEWS, IMSPRODUCT, MDF, MSDS-CCOHS, NLDB, PROMT, TEXTILETECH, WTEXTILES.

These changes are necessary due to a variety of technical, fiscal, and producer-driven factors. STN will redirect resources to highly requested enhancements for key databases and development of the new STN platform announced earlier this year, which will provide a substantially enhanced customer experience in the future.

If you need assistance in locating alternative sources for content currently accessed through these databases, please contact the STN Helpdesk or your local STN representative.

New version of STN Viewer preserves custom-highlighting of terms when patent documents are saved in .rtf format

A new release of STN Viewer allows you to preserve customized-highlighting of terms of interest when saving original STN Viewer patent documents to .rtf format. Now your colleagues and managers can quickly review patent documents in .rtf format, either print or electronically, by relying on the navigation points provided by your highlighting.
