DGENE, USGENE, and PCTGEN: STN biosequence searches with enhanced performance


FIZ Karlsruhe has enhanced the performance for biosequence searches in the databases DGENE, USGENE and PCTGEN. Searches (RUN GETSEQ, RUN GETSIM, RUN BLAST, BATCH search) now run to completion in a fraction of the time you have been used to.

The BLAST suite of programs has been upgraded to a newer version. mpiBLAST 1.5.0. is being employed to achieve the considerable performance gains. For more information

Since mpiBLAST 1.5.0. uses the more recent BLAST version 2.2.15 new parameter options become available.

The online helps containing information on the BLAST parameter settings, default and valid values etc. have been updated. Please see HELP OPTIONS and HELP NCBI.

The general default options as well as search behaviour have not changed. Thus, you should not see noticable changes to your search results when using default parameters. Yet, the range of accepted values may have changed.

Please note that although now running faster the underlying program versions for the GETSEQ and GETSIM searches have not changed.

INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB: Adding Value to INPADOC on STN

INPADOC on STN is based on the world's largest collection of patent bibliographic and legal status data from the European Patent Office. The EPO performs a tremendous task to compile and harmonize patent data from more than 90 patent authorities into a single patent data resource. Quality assurance processes at the EPO contribute significantly to the quality of the database (1). Nevertheless, FIZ Karlsruhe identified areas for which the quality of the database could be further improved and established its own quality management for INPADOC.

The INPADOC files, PCTFULL, GBFULL and FRFULL enhanced with thesauri for the European Patent Classifications

The INPADOC files (INPADOCDB, INPAFAMDB) as well as GBFULL and FRFULL provide access to the European patent classifications ECLA and ICO (in computer only codes), PCTFULL covers the ECLA classification.

Now thesauri have been attached to the respective search fields /EPC and /ICO, which greatly support patent classification searching. The new thesauri allow to view the definitions of the ECLA- and ICO-codes and their respective hierarchies. The relationships can also be employed for hierarchical and range searching. In addition, the thesauri are very useful to identify relevant codes from a keyword search in the code titles.

PATDPA will no longer be updated

The patent database PATDPA will no longer be updated from week 25/2011 onwards.

PATDPA is a patent database covering all patent publications related to Germany (DE-, EP- and PCT-publications) which has been operated in close cooperation of FIZ Karlsruhe and the German Patent and Trademark Office (GPTO) for more than 20 years. The GPTO will stop production of the data format required for PATDPA in June 2011. Last update of the database will be for week 24/2011 in mid-June. PATDPA will be kept as a closed database for the time being.

PCTFULL: Free test of the numeric property search feature for STN Karlsruhe customers

STN Karlsruhe customers may test the new numeric property search feature in the patent full-text database PCTFULL free of charge up to 100 EUR (100 USD).

The numeric property search in PCTFULL allows you to limit your search to

  • particles in the nanoscale (SIZ< 100 nm)
  • catalytic reactions at low temperatures (e.g. TEMP=5°C to 10°C)
  • mixtures of a certain percentage range (e.g.  20 %<PER<30 %)
  • many other useful properties.

TEMA now available for STN customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

The database TEMA® (Technology and Management) produced by WTI-Frankfurt eG has been available on STN for many years, but was not accessible for STN customers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Since June 1, 2011 STN users from these countries have access to this important resource for international literature on R&D, new products and procedures, as well as on developments in business enterprises.

WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX: Adding Value Through Error Correction

In 2010 around 3 million patents were loaded into DWPI, with 1.4m of these being new records (basics) in the file. This was a 7.1% increase on the previous year. Processing this volume of data is a huge task, particularly as the original patent data can contain errors in the bibliographic data, which could impact the accuracy in searching.

WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX: DWPI Country Coverage Update
 
Patents filed through the Gulf Cooperation Council
The patents filed through the Gulf Cooperation Council will soon start to appear in product, as early as DWPI updates 201130 or 201131. Records published in the official gazette volume 13 (covering the publication period October 2009 to April 2010) are now being processed by the DWPI editorial team.

The Gulf Cooperation Council regional office covers the following Arab states - Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Records identified as basics will include DWPI titles and abstracts, CPI/EPI manual coding and deep indexing (polymer indexing, fragmentation codes and Markush Indexing) where relevant. Records identified as equivalent already joined their existing DWPI family as normal. The number formats for the new content are shown below.

Taiwanese Utility Models

In DWPI update 201133 we resumed the loading of the Taiwanese Utility Model records that were published in 1998 and 1999. These records will have the kind code U1. Previously the TW Utility Model coverage in DWPI went back to January 2000.

The kind codes for the Utility Models published from 2000 to August 2004, will change from the kind U to kind U1 to ensure consistency for these old law records. All of the records will be reissued into DWPI with this amended kind code.

The 'new law' Utility Model records published from August 2004 onwards will continue to have the kind code U as is currently the case. Updates to the ongoing data are currently on hold and will resume once the 2000-2004 data has been reissued.

Chinese Granted Patents
From DWPI update 201131 the coverage of Chinese Granted patents in DWPI will be enhanced with the inclusion of an English language translation of the 1st claim at the DWPI member level record. Translations of the 1st claim will be available for all of the Chinese Granted patents published from January 2011. This enhancement to DWPI will enable users to compare differences between the first claim in the Chinese application and the subsequently published Chinese granted patent in the same family.

Searching spectroscopic data in REAXYSFILE

ReaxysFileTM is an excellent source for spectral information with several search fields to search spectroscopic data. The following spectroscopic data can be found:

  • ESR (ESR)
  • Fluorescence (FLU)
  • Infrared Spectrum (IR)
  • Luminescence (LUM)
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
  • Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR)
  • Phosphorescence (PHO)
  • Raman Spectrum (RAS)
  • Rotational Spectrum (ROT)
  • UV and Visible Spectrum (UVS)


Use REAXYSFILE on STN to answer questions like:

  • Which substances are isolated as natural products from medical plant gentiana and have mass, UV/VIS, NMR and IR spectral data? 
  • What is the absorption maximum in the UV/VIS spectrum of the herbicide nitrofen?
