    Database News

    Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) Added to USPATOLD on STN

    STN now includes Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) search and display features, and a CPC thesaurus in USPATOLD. USPATOLD contains full-text and classifications of published U.S. patents issued between 1790-1975.

    The addition of CPC data improves classification searching of U.S. patents for more than 50,000 records in USPATOLD lacking IPC data.

    New CPC search fields include:

    /CPC - Search and select CPC code

    /CPC.KW - Search using CPC metadata including:
                         - CPC codes applied for inventive aspects in a patent
                         - CPC codes initially assigned to the patent vs.
                           during a reclassification

    In addition to CPC code custom displays in USPATOLD, new display capabilities include:

    CPC.TAB - CPC codes and the available metadata per CPC code

    CPC.UNIQ  - Deduplicated list of CPC codes for the patent family

    The CPC thesaurus structure resembles IPC and ECLA patent classification thesauri on STN with monthly updates planned.

    INPADOC: Symbol Position attributes FIRST/LATER added to CPC information; CPC superseded ECLA and ICO completely

    The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) was completed with symbol  position information, “FIRST” (F) and “LATER” (L).

    For US and EP publications and for PCT applications for which the European Patent Office (EPO) is acting as International Searching Authority the symbol position attribute “FIRST” describes the one principal classification for the invention. In all other cases the attributes “FIRST” and “LATER” are assigned only chronologically and have no informative value.

    Symbol position attributes can be searched in the search field CPC keywords, /CPC.KW.

    For US and EP documents the symbol position attribute is useful to limit the search for a classification to those documents where this classification describes the main aspect of an invention. Use the (S)-proximity operator to combine the classification symbol with the symbol position attribute:

    => S C12N0015-8247/CPC
    L1        4651   C12N0015-8247/CPC

    => S C12N0015-8247/CPC (S) FIRST/CPC.KW
                  4651  C12N0015-8247/CPC
          36081990  FIRST/CPC.KW
    L2          1102  C12N0015-8247/CPC (S) FIRST/CPC.KW

    => S L2 AND (US OR EP)/PC
         10372249 US/PC
           2565450 EP/PC
    L3        379 L2 AND (US OR EP)/PC

    The CPC has now completely superseded ECLA and ICO codes. EPC and ICO are no longer valid codes for SEARCH, DISPLAY and SELECT.
    Please make sure that you use CPC codes instead of EPC and ICO codes in your search strategies.

    SciSearch® on STN® Now Includes New Fields for Finding Grant Information More Easily

    On March 24, 2013, SciSearch on STN was enhanced with three new search and custom display fields for grant information:

    • Grant Funding Acknowledgment (/GF): Sometimes also includes general acknowledgements, such as people in the lab who contributed support for the research
    • Grant Organization (/GO): Allows customers to create lists of grant funding organizations by disease or disorder name, or in a particular geographic area
    • Grant Number (/GN): Records which provide Grant Numbers can be found by searching GN in the Field Availability field (i.e., S GN/FA)

    Merck Index OnlineSM No Longer Available on STN®

    Effective April 27, 2013, Merck Index Online (MRCK) will no longer be available on STN per request of its producer.

    We invite you to explore alternative databases on STN for substance, toxicity and property data for important chemicals, drugs, and agricultural and natural products including:

    • CAS REGISTRYSM, the gold standard for chemical substance information, contains information on more than 71 million unique organic and inorganic chemical substances, including alternative names, calculated and experimental properties, and spectra.

    • USAN (USP Dictionary of U.S. Adopted Names and International Drug Names), recognized throughout the healthcare industry as the authoritative drug dictionary, compiles U.S. Adopted Names, brand names and other  drug names.

    • REAXYSFILE covers historical data back to 1771 and the most important current journals and patents within chemistry. For nearly 20 million  indexed substances, comprehensive information including harmacological and ecological data as well as chemical data and physical properties is available

    Search Tips of the Month

    Using Grant Organization Information in SciSearch for Funding Organization Research

    Three new fields highlighting information about grants have recently been added to SciSearch, a multidisciplinary database for bibliographic information and cited references from nearly 6,000 of the world’s leading scientific, technical and medical journals:

        Grant Funding Acknowledgment (GF).
        Grant Organization (GO).
        Grant Number (GN).

    In this month’s search tip, Using Grant Organization Information in SciSearch on STN for Funding Organization Research, we provide search tips to highlight possible applications of the Grant Organization field to create:

        A list of organizations funding research in a particular subject area.
        A list of research funding organizations from a particular geographic area.
        A list of recently published studies funded by a company.

    Incompletely Defined Substances (IDS) in CAS REGISTRY

    This article examines the small fraction (0.2%) of substances in CAS REGISTRY known as Incompletely Defined Substances (IDS) located in the Class Identifier (CI) field. These substances contain molecular weights (MF), but lack exact structures in the course of indexing. Learn different approaches to retrieve Incompletely Defined Substances (IDS) in CAS REGISTRY.
