FILE UPDATES

1. BIOSIS - ENHANCED WITH NEW TAGGED DATA

BIOSIS has been enhanced by adding newly tagged data, Electronic International Standard Serial Number (E-ISSN), within the Source (SO) field. E-ISSN is in addition to the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), sometimes the E-ISSN number (value) is the same as ISSN, sometimes it's different.

In the instance where an electronic ISSN number is available, it will be indexed in International Standard (Document) Number (ISN) field and SO field, labeled E-ISSN, in the same manner as ISSN, CODEN, and ISBN.

Both the E-ISSN label and the value are searchable in the SO field; however, only the value of E-ISSN is searchable in ISN field. E-ISSN may be displayable in SO field with its label E-ISSN and a custom display in ISN field using "D ISN." Without the label, E-ISSN value will be selectable in SO and ISN fields.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

2. CA/CAPLUS - EXPANDED COVERAGE OF GERMAN ACADEMIC RESEARCH; USPTO REVERSES CHANGE IN FILING DATE FOR U.S. PATENT APPLICATIONS

Coverage of German dissertations and Habilitationen is now available in CA/CAplus. Habilitationen are documents written to achieve the grade of professor in German academia. Thousands of dissertations and Habilitationen from over 70 universities in Germany will continue to be added. These additions continue to build on the coverage of academic research in CA/CAplus, which includes Dissertation Abstracts International C.

In early April 2005, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) made a change to the International Common Elements (ICE). The International Patent (PCT) application filing date replaced the U.S. filing date on patent applications and granted publications.

In September 2005, the USPTO is once again providing the U.S. filing date. During this time period when the U.S. filing date was not supplied by the USPTO, CA/CAplus editorial staff created an algorithm to assign a date. Now that the U.S. filing date is supplied again, CAS has resumed using the USPTO supplied date when building patent families. This also applies to USPATFULL/USPAT2.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

3. MARPATprev - DATABASE TO BE REMOVED FROM STN; CONTENT TO BE INCLUDED IN MARPAT

Effective January 1, 2006, MARPATpreviews will no longer be produced and will be removed from STN. MARPATprev will also be removed from the CASLINK, HCASLINK, and STRUCTURE database clusters on December 3, 2005.

Because of production efficiencies in MARPAT, the number of records available in MARPATpreviews throughout 2005 has decreased significantly. The data previously found in MARPATprev will be included in MARPAT.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

4. NAPRALERT - DATABASE NO LONGER UPDATED

The database producer for NAPRALERT will no longer be updating the database. Consequently, current-awareness alerts (SDIs) are no longer available in NAPRALERT.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

5. PLASNEWS - DATABASE REMOVED FROM DATABASE CLUSTERS AND STN

PLASNEWS Daily News (PLASNEWS) is no longer updated by the database producer. At the request of the database producer, PLASNEWS will not longer be available on STN effective November 30, 2005.

PLASNEWS has been removed from the BUSINESS, ENGINEERING, GOVREGS, MATERIALS, and POLYMERS database clusters.

6. REGISTRY/ZREGISTRY - SPECTRAL PROPERTY DATA ADDED

Effective November 18, 2005, two new sets of spectral property data are now available in REGISTRY/ZREGISTRY. These new data sets include:
Carbon-13 NMR spectra from Wiley Subscriptions Services, Inc. (WSS)
IR Absorption Spectra from the "Integrated Spectral Data Base System of Organic Compounds" provided by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan (NIAIST)

In response to customer requests, CAS provides the premier databases for searching property data and references. With the addition of spectral data, REGISTRY now provides a significant number of property data:

  • Nearly 2 million experimental data for 1.2 million CAS Registry Numbers®
  • An additional 1.3 million property tags that point to experimental data in CAplusSM
  • Nearly 200,000 C-13 NMR spectra from Wiley and over 50,000 IR absorption spectra from NIAIST
  • More than 494 million calculated properties are in over 17 million CAS Registry Numbers

With this enhancement, a new search field Spectra (/SPEC) has been added. The search field is searchable as bound phrases, e.g., IR SPECTRA or single words, e.g., IR or NMR with implied (s) proximity between words.

In addition, the following information has been added to the /FA and /PSO search fields:

  • Field Availability (/FA) field:
    • Carbon-13 NMR spectra
    • IR absorption spectra
    • IR spectra
    • Mass spectra
    • NMR spectra
    • Spectra
  • Property Source Note (/PSO) field:
    • WSS - spectral data from Wiley
    • NIAIST - spectral data supplied by NIAIST

Also, the new ANALYZE/SELECT field, Experimental Properties (EPROP), selects all the property names from the EPROP table and searches the names within the /FA field.

Three new display formats are available for displaying spectral images:

  • SPEC - displays all of the spectra listed in the EPROP table
  • SPEC.C13NMR - displays only the Carbon-13 NMR spectra
  • SPEC.IR displays only the IR Absorption spectra

Pre-defined display formats that include the SPEC display are:

  • ALL - all available substance information, includes CAplus super roles and documents types, property tables (EPROP, SPEC, ETAG, PPROP) , and BIB ABS IND for the 10 most recent CA references
  • IALL - ALL, indented with text labels
  • MAX - all available substance information, includes CAplus super roles and documents types, property tables (EPROP, SPEC, ETAGFULL, PPROP) , and BIB ABS IND for the 10 most recent CA references
  • PROPS (APROPS) - tabular display of all property data, including SPEC, and tags

In addition, spectral images are included in the QRD (Query Related Display) when spectral data are searched.
In addition, spectral images are included in the QRD (Query Related Display) when spectral data are searched.
Note that spectra images in the SPEC display format are displayed only when you use STN on the Web or STN Express 5.0 or higher.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

7. TOXCENTER - ENHANCED WITH NEW TAGGED DATA

TOXCENTER has been enhanced with the addition of newly tagged data, Electronic International Standard Serial Number (E-ISSN), within the Source (SO) field. E-ISSN is in addition to the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), sometimes the E-ISSN number (value) is the same as ISSN, sometimes it is different.

In the instance where an E-ISSN number is available, it will be indexed in International Standard (Document) Number (ISN) field and the SO field, and labeled E-ISSN, in the same manner as ISSN, CODEN, and ISBN.

Both the E-ISSN label and the value are searchable in the SO field; however, only the value of E-ISSN is searchable in ISN field. E-ISSN may be displayable in SO field with its label E-ISSN and a custom display in ISN field using "D ISN." Without the label, E-ISSN value is selectable in SO and ISN fields.

The revised Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

8. USPATFULL/USPAT2 - USPTO REVERSES CHANGE IN FILING DATE FOR U.S. PATENT APPLICATIONS

In early April 2005, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) made a change to the International Common Elements (ICE). The International Patent (PCT) application filing date has replaced the U.S. filing date on patent applications and granted publications.

In September 2005, the USPTO is once again providing the U.S. filing date.

CAS has returned to using the U.S. filing date in USPATFULL/USPAT2. This also applies to the CA/CAplus family of databases.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.
