FILE UPDATES

1. CA/CAPLUS - RECORDS FROM THE EARLY 20th CENTURY ADDED; PATENT NUMBERS DISPLAYED IN THE CLASS FIELD ARE HYPERLINKED WHEN USING STN ON THE WEB

Over 7,000 records have been added to the CA/CAplus family of files to enhance searching of chemistry from the early 20th century. The sources of these records are:

  • Journal of the American Chemical Society, Volumes 22-28 (1900-1906)
  • Journal of Physical Chemistry, Volumes 4-10 (1900-1906), including summaries of documents from other publications
  • Landmark papers of enduring value, 1900-1912, which have been cited by recent articles in CA/CAplus

The early 20th century records have been assigned to:

  • The year 1906, Volume 0, and 0CI, to distinguish them records from other records in CA/CAplus
  • The appropriate CA section used during the 1CI period, to facilitate searching of broad subject categories

In addition to titles, authors, and sources, the early 20th century records include:

  • Full journal titles
  • English titles for articles in French and German taken from the Journal of Physical Chemistry's summaries
  • Abstracts (or the first paragraph of the article) for most of the records
  • CODEN and ISSN
  • References from both the original publication and Journal of Physical Chemistry for the Journal of Physical Chemistry's summaries from other journals
  • Document type
  • Language and corporate source, when available

The early 20th century records do not include:

  • CA indexing
  • Page images because these references have never appeared in print in Chemical Abstracts

When using STN on the Web, the patent numbers that display in the Patent Classifications (CLASS) display field are also hyperlinked. When clicked, the hyperlink takes you to the actual patent document. This is similar to hyperlinking of patent numbers in the Patent Information Table (/PI) field.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

2. ENERGY NO LONGER AVAILABLE TO CUSTOMERS FROM ITALY

The International Energy Agency has informed us on short notice that Italy has retreated form the Energy Technology Data Exchange (EDTE) and requested to close access to the ENERGY database from Italy. As of October 1, 2004, customers from Italy are no longer authorized to ENERGY. We regret this measure but have to conform to the request.

We would like to refer to the other databases in cluster FUELS
http://www.stn-international.de/category_fuels.html
as alternative information sources for energy information.

3. MSDS-CCOHS - ADDITIONAL DATA DISPLAYABLE IN CO FIELD

An e-mail address and URL for the company now displays in the Company Name (CO) field for both the manufacturer and supplier, when available. This data is not searchable.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

4. STANDARDS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON STN

STANDARDS has been removed from STN on September 30, 2004.

5. SWETSCAN NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON STN

SWETSCAN has been removed from STN on September 30, 2004.

6. WPIFV - NEW MANUAL AVAILABLE; JP-A AND JP-B NOW INCLUDES TRANSLATION OF MAIN CLAIM

A new manual for searching WPIFV on STN, the Derwent World Patents Index First View STN User Guide, is now available at
http://www.stn-international.de/training_center/patents/dwpifv_man.pdf

There has been a further expansion of Japanese patent coverage in Derwent WPI First View (WPIFV). Until now, a typical Japanese patent record in WPIFV provided an English-language translation of the original author title and abstract. Now this coverage has been expanded to include a translation of the main claim - for both JP-A and JP-B patents.
Like the titles and abstracts, the main claim translation is created for WPIFV using the output from Thomson Scientific's proprietary Machine-Assisted Translation (MAT) system with post-processing by our technical staff in Japan.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

7. WPIFV/WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX - 100% JP-B COVERAGE

Thomson Scientific has now extended Derwent WPI JP-B coverage to 100%. Previously, Derwent WPI (files WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX) covered all JP-B Equivalent patents, while JP-B Basic patent coverage was limited to CPI Sections A-M only. JP-B coverage now includes all the EPI/EngPI Sections S-X Basics as well, giving you comprehensive, intellectually-enhanced English-language coverage of all JP-A and -B documents, for all technologies. These expanded coverage patents were first released into Derwent WPI First View (WPIFV) in early August, and are now appearing in Derwent WPI.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.
