FILE UPDATES

1. CA/CAPLUS - ENHANCED

ENHANCED WITH ADDITIONAL KIND CODES FOR GRANTED PATENTS

Additional kind codes have been added to CA/CAplus for granted patents received prior to the published patent application. The kind codes are used for selection of basic patents and include:

  • B1 (Korean Intellectual Patent Office; KR)
  • B2 (Japan Patent Office; JP)
  • B2 (United States Patent and Trademark Office; US)
  • B4 (German Patent and Trademark Office; DE)
  • C (Canadian Intellectual Property Office; CA)
  • P3 (United States Patent and Trademark Office; US)

First available publication dates for granted patents from JP, US, DE, and CA are in the first week of July 2007. For granted patents from KR, the first available publication date is February 1, 2007.

In addition, patents issued by the Hungarian Patent Office (HU) to non-residents are now included in CA/CAplus.

ENHANCED WITH CAS INDEXING IN PRE-1907 RECORDS

Subject and substance indexing has been added to more than 11,500 pre-1907 records in CA/CAplus. Records included in this enhancement represent original articles and article and patent abstracts from the following journals:

  • Journal of the American Chemical Society
  • Journal of Physical Chemistry
  • Journal of the Chemical Society, Transactions
  • Journal of the Chemical Society, Abstracts

Many of the U.S. patent abstract records have been replaced with patent records that include more extensive bibliographic and abstract information. CAS indexing based on the patent abstract from the original CA/CAplus record is included in these records.

Additional indexing of pre-1907 records will follow in the coming months.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

2. DGENE - NEW DATA

With the Update 200715 of week 33, 2007, DGENE Keywords (/KW) , Cross References (/CR) and Abstract (/AB) fields may contain a new set of data in addition to the traditional content.

All database records now will have been searched against all sequence data in NCBI and UniProt and cross references added to those sequences 100% identical in length and sequence. In the Cross References (/CR) field all computed data is differentiated from manually added identifiers by the inclusion of "PC-" (e.g. PC-NCBI: gi12669911) or "PC_ENCPRO-" (e.g. PC_ENCPRO-NCBI: gi4502447) where a link is given to the encoded peptide from the DNA in the record. The Cross References field (/CR) will also be enhanced with accession numbers to Thomson Scientific`s new proprietary biological interaction data base, BINDplus, highlighting any interactions the molecule of interest is involved with (e.g. interactions between an antibody and its epitope). This data will be indicated by the "PC-BIND" keyword (e.g. PC-BIND: 71005;80040).

The Keywords field (/KW) will also be enhanced with additional content, such as Gene Ontology terms differentiated from manual keywords by the inclusion of "BOND_PC" (e.g. BOND_PC; GO3713; GO5634; GO5737; GO6355; GO30528; GO45941).

Date and further details about the revision of a document will be included in the Abstract (/AB).

All new update records starting from data entry date of July 26th 2007 (corresponding to STN update date 20070815) will be searched against NCBI and UniProt and may contain the additional content described above.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

3. REGISTRY - ENHANCED WITH NEW EXPERIMENTAL PROPERTY TAGS

New experimental property tags (ETAG) have been added to CAS REGISTRY. The tags are applied to new proteins and nucleic acids added to REGISTRY and refer to biochemistry-related data, including:

  • Allele frequency and heterozygosity
  • Disease-related mutations
  • Drug targets
  • Functional sites
  • Genetic mapping
  • Genetic polymorphisms
  • Human disease-related mutations
  • Non-human animal disease-related mutations
  • Plant disease-related mutations
  • Post-translational protein modifications
  • Subcellular localization

For a list of all experimental property tags in REGISTRY, including definitions, visit Searching for Property Data.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

4. SOFIS - FORIS RENAMED

For trademark reasons the long standing and well-known database name "FORIS" had to be changed. The new designation is "SOFIS" (SOzialwissenschaftliches ForschungsInformationsSystem / Social Science Research Information System).

The old file name FORIS will stay valid as a synonym to be used with the FILE command.

SOFIS contains information on more than 45.000 theoretical and empirical research projects in the social sciences from German-speaking countries over the last 10 years. SOFIS offers detailed descriptions of the contents (abstracts), research methods and data collection procedures as well as bibliographic information on research reports and publications. To facilitate getting in touch with the researchers, the contact information (researchers' names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses as well as the addresses of the research institutions) is included in the descriptions.

5. USGENE - SPECIAL OFFER

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Genetic Sequence Database (USGENE), produced by SequenceBase Corporation, is now available on STN. USGENE brings together USPTO sequence data with key elements of bibliographic and full-text data to provide a unified platform in which patent searchers can combine sequence data and patent claims text searching.

Explore USGENE with EUR/USD 100 credit toward connect time, display, print, and sequence search charges. The credit will be automatically applied to your invoiced charges beginning August 1, 2007, and carried over until the EUR/USD 100 is used or until September 30, 2007.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

6. USPATOLD - NOW AVAILABLE ON STN

U.S. Patents Pre-1976 (USPATOLD) is now available on STN. USPATOLD includes more than 3.5 million records and covers the full text of patents issued from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from 1790-1975.

USPATOLD records represent original U.S. patent documents converted into electronic form through an optical character recognition (OCR) process. Due to limitations of this technology, some USPATOLD records may include misinterpreted characters or portions of the patent text may be missing. To address this problem, approximately 500,000 USPATOLD records, representing patents also covered by CAplus, were supplemented with CAS data.

Search fields with CAS data:

  • Title (TI)
  • Patent Assignee (PA)
  • Inventor (IN)

Display fields with CAS data:

  • Title (TI.CA)
  • Patent Assignee (PA.CA)
  • Inventor (IN.CA)

Additional enhancements to USPATOLD include:

  • CAS indexing, including CAS Registry Number® identifiers
  • CAS Registry Number crossover searching
  • Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) in the Basic Index (BI), Claims (CLM), Abstract (AB), and Title (TI) fields

While USPATOLD is a static database, it will be updated with changes to CAS indexing and International Patent Classification (IPC). USPATOLD is also a participating database in the STN Information Keep & Share Program.

For details on pricing, enter HELP COST in USPATOLD at an arrow prompt (=>).

USPATOLD has been added to the BIOSCIENCE, CASRNS, CORPSOURCE, ENGINEERING, FULLTEXT, HPATENTS, METALS, MATERIALS, MEDICINE, PATENTS, PNTTEXT, POLYMERS, and USPATALL database clusters on STN.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

7. WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX - ENHANCED

Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) now contains more than 1 million chemical structures in DCR.

INDIAN PATENT PUBLICATION NUMBER FORMAT ENHANCED

DWPI coverage of India commenced with applications and granted patents published from December 4th 2004 onwards, when the new patent legislation in India first took effect.

Coverage includes pre-grant (18 month) applications and national phase PCT applications issued by the four regional patent offices in India.

To ensure that publication numbers from each of the regional offices are unique, both the STN and Derwent standard number formats have been enhanced both for DISPLAY and SEARCH.

For more information please visit
http://www.stn-international.de/archive/stn_online_news/onl07_08.html#18

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

8. FULL-TEXT PATENT DATABASES - ENHANCED

Predefined patent family display formats FAM and CFAM from INPADOCDB have been added to the full-text patent databases EPFULL, FRFULL, GBFULL, PATDPAFULL, and PCTFULL.

Additional fees are charged for displaying FAM or CFAM in these databases. For details on pricing, enter HELP COST at an arrow prompt (=>).

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

FYI

9. X.25 ACCESS TO STN KARLSRUHE IS BEING ELIMINATED BY JANUARY 2008

For many years STN Karlsruhe has offered access the STN databases via X.25. In the meantime, the TCP/IP has become standard and is used by the majority of the STN customers. The X.25 technology is no longer upgraded or supported - neither by the telecommunication providers, nor by our IT service partners.

This means that we will have to deactivate the X25 accesses on January 31, 2008, because we will no longer be able to ensure the usual quality and reliability of this service.

Therefore, please switch over to the already available TCP/IP accesses to STN as soon as possible. If necessary, discuss the required measures with your IT, network and security experts to make sure you will be able to continue using STN without any problems after January 31, 2008.

Should you have any concerns as to the security of TCP/IP access, or if your IT infrastructure does not support access via TCP/IP (Port 23), please check our new SSL/VPN option. This option provides secure, encoded access to STN, is much faster than Datex-P and will most probably comply with your IT security regulations.

For further information, please visit the STN homepage at
http://www.stn-international.de/stninterfaces/secure/express/SSLVPN.html.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
