FILE UPDATES

1. CA/CAPLUS - COMPANY NAME THESAURUS SURPASSES 100,000 NAMES

The Company Name Thesaurus was recently updated and now includes over 100,000 names. The 100,000th name added was Oakland University, located in Rochester, MI. Oakland University is the patent assignee on five patent records included in CA/CAplus.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

2. CHEMSAFE - RELOADED AND ENHANCED

Chemical Safety Information (CHEMSAFE) has been reloaded and enhanced with recommended safety characteristics of approximately 2,800 pure components and 500 mixtures (e.g., flammable liquids, gases, and dusts). More than 100 characteristics measured at non-atmospheric conditions are now included.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

3. INSPEC: ADDITION OF THE INSPEC ARCHIVE FILE

INSPEC, produced by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), has been enhanced with the INSPEC Archive File from 1898-1968 and now covers more than 100 years of information.
The INSPEC Archive File provides fully searchable electronic access to over 70 years of international scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computing and control engineering.

The INSPEC Archive has been digitized from the Science Abstracts journal series, in particular:

Science Abstracts (1898 - 1902)
Science Abstracts: A - Physics Abstracts (1903 - 1968)
Science Abstracts: B - Electrical Engineering (1903 - 1965)
Science Abstracts: B - Electrical & Electronics Abstracts (1966 - 1968)
Science Abstracts: C - Control Abstracts (1966 - 1968)

The archive comprises 873,699 records (INSPEC now contains more than 9.8 million records in total), including tables, and figures (2,902 images) from the original source document, the original value-added indexing and classifications as well as enhancements in the form of the nearest equivalent current Inspec Thesaurus Terms and Inspec Classification Codes. Element Terms (/ET), an STN exclusive handy tool to search for materials, were also generated for the Archive data.

New search and display fields in INSPEC due to the addition of the Archive:

  • Classification Code, Original (/CCO) - the classification which was used to order and cross-reference the records in the Science Abstracts (additional to /CC)
  • Controlled Term, Original (/CTO) - indexing for the record as it appeared in the Science Abstracts subject indexes (additional to /CT)
  • Note (/NTE) - additional non-standardized source information such as references, conference information, editors, etc.
  • Graphic Image Size (/GIS)
  • Graphic Image Type (/GIT)
  • The new display field Graphic Image (/GI) is included in the ALL (syn. ALLG) format.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and on the Web on our Database List.

4. STN EXPRESS WITH DISCOVER! - FREE MAINTENANCE RELEASE AVAILABLE

A free maintenance release (Version 8.01b for Windows®) for STN Express with Discover! is now available. To receive the free maintenance release, you need to be currently using the Analysis Edition of STN Express with Discover! (Version 8.0 or higher for Windows).
This maintenance release includes new features, structure improvements, as well as fixes to specific issues that have been reported.

New features

  • Improved file associations - STN Express® now launches automatically when you double-click any of these file types: reports (.rep), tables (.tbl), structures (.str), or transcripts (.trn).
  • Easier access to User Guide information - Selecting 'Help > View STN Express User Guide' directs you to the STN Express with Discover! Resources web page, providing access to the most recent updates in the STN Express User Guide.

Structure-building improvements

  • Acyclic bond characteristics set to Ring no longer revert to Chain without warning. A pop-up note now alerts you when reverting to Chain.
  • A query fragment referenced by a G-group may not be part of a Variable Point of Attachment (VPA), regardless of the sequence of drawing steps.
  • The R-Group Analysis Table Tool now recognizes and accepts user-specified structures containing unspecified bonds.
  • An unspecified bond in an isolated ring no longer excludes the possibility of normalized bonds.

Maintenance fixes
The Properties Wizard was updated.

  • Spectral data are now available from both CAS REGISTRYSM and SPECINFO.
  • You can specify which database(s) to include by setting the "Spectra Data Databases" preference on the Account tab.
