FILE UPDATES

1. INPADOC - IPC 8 ENHANCEMENTS

The first records with new IPC 8 (IPC 2006) symbols have been added to the INPADOC file. The following enhancements are available now.

SEARCH enhancements:

  • The /IPC search field has been redefined from a super-search field to a field with an own index. The /IPC index includes now all IPC symbols.
  • Additional search fields have been added:
    • /IPC.KW (Keyword terms for the IPCs in the /IPC field);
    • /IPC.ACD (Action Date for the IPCs in the /IPC field);
    • /IPC.VER (Date, partial date or edition number of the version of the IPCs in the /IPC field).

These fields can be combined with (S) proximity to the IPC field, e.g. search for an invention IPC symbol

=> S C12N0009-02/IPC(S)I/IPC.KW

  • The IPC thesaurus is available for INPADOC now. See HELP THES and HELP RCODE.

DISPLAY enhancements:

  • Additional display format IPC.TAB includes IPC.KW, IPC.ACD, and IPC.VER information
  • The initial IPC is labeled IPCI
  • A reclassified IPC is labeled IPCR
  • Information in the brackets refers to additional data such as:
    • Invention (I)
    • Non-Invention (N)
    • Advanced (A)
    • Core (C)
    • CORE* (C*) (rolled-up of advanced IPC symbols to the corresp. core IPC symbol)
  • A new SET command, SET ICFORMAT ON, can be used for DISPLAY and SELECT.
This command automatically changes the pre-IPC8 data to the IPC8 format

SELECT enhancements

  • IPC.A Advanced level IPC symbols
  • IPC.AI Advanced level IPC symbols for invention
  • IPC.C Core level IPC symbols
  • IPC.CI Core level IPC symbols for invention
  • IPC.F Pre-IPC8 symbols from the ICM and all first IPC8 values from 2006 onwards

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

2. INSPEC - RELOADED AND ENHANCED

INSPEC has been reloaded due to input format changes, and simultaneously the file has been enhanced with some fields and features which have become STN standard since the last few years, including more granular search fields for the abstract and controlled terms.

The new features:

  • stop-words are no longer used
  • new search and display fields:
    • Abstract (/AB)
    • Availability (/AV)
    • Controlled Word (/CW)
  • Specific source information search fields additional to /SO:
    • International Standard (Document) Number (/ISN)
    • Meeting Date (/MD)
    • Meeting Location (/ML)
    • Meeting Title (/MT)
    • Publisher (/PB)
    • Uniform Resource Locator (/URL)
    • Reference Count (/REC)
    • Word Count, Title (/WC.T)
  • Patent and priority numbers are searchable now, but in the original format only, in fields /PNO and /PRNO. Also search fields for patent assignee (/PA), application year /AY, application date /AD, and priority year and date /PRY, /PRD have been installed. Please note that INSPEC´s patent coverage is limited to UK (GB) and US publications from the years 1968 to 1976.
  • Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) - which had already been available in the basic index (/BI) only - is now available in the abstract (/AB) and title (/TI) fields too.
  • SDIs and saved answer sets are not affected.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

3. MEDLINE/LMEDLINE - RELOAD IMPROVES FUNCTIONALITY

MEDLINE/LMEDLINE on STN have been reloaded. The reload included several enhancements:

  • The Source (/SO) field now contains the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) for print and the Electronic ISSN (E-ISSN) for electronic journals when available. Both print and electronic ISSNs are searchable and displayable in MEDLINE.
  • Stop words are now indexed, so your search may now include the following words: AN, AND, AS, AT, BY, FOR, FROM, IN, NOT, OF, ON, OR, THE, TO, and WITH.
  • A new search and display field, COMMENT (/CM), is now available and displays after the SO field in the ALL format. The CM field does not display in the BIB format. The terms from SEL CM with Document Number (/DN) appended allow you to find referenced PubMed IDs in MEDLINE.
  • OLDMEDLINE records now include at least one MeSH heading in the Controlled Term (/CT) field.
  • Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) is now available in the Title (/TI) field, the same as in the Abstract (/AB) and Basic Index (/BI) fields.
  • Publication Date (/PD) is a new numeric field in the YYYYMMDD format that is searchable and selectable.
  • Publication dates are searchable in the /SO field, but not in the numeric YYYYMMDD format.

The annual update on December 11, 2005, to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) controlled vocabulary used for subject indexing and retrieval, included:

  • Over 990 new MeSH Headings
  • More than 185 updated MeSH Headings to reflect more current terminology

For example, Fetal Anoxia is now indexed under Fetal Hypoxia.

You may want to update your current-awareness alerts (SDIs) and saved queries to reflect the MeSH terminology changes. However, regardless of the term you enter, STN recognizes the relationship between the old vocabulary and the new terms and will link them together automatically. For more information about changes in the 2006 MeSH, visit: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd05/nd05_med_data_changes.html

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

4. REGISTRY/ZREGISTRY - MORE EXPERIMENTAL SPECTRAL PROPERTY DATA

Beginning February 27, 2006, approximately 42,000 mass spectra images from Wiley Subscriptions Services, Inc. (WSS) have been added to about 35,000 CAS records in REGISTRY/ZREGISTRY on STN. This addition significantly strengthens the collection of spectra properties first made available in 2005.

With this enhancement, MASS/SPEC and MASS SPECTRA/SPEC have been added to the search fields, and SPEC.MASS to the display fields.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

5. TOXCENTER - RELOADED WITH ENHANCEMENTS

On February 26, 2006, TOXCENTER was reloaded, and the following enhancements were made:

  • All labels of subfields displayed in the Source (/SO) field are now searchable.
  • Former stop words are now indexed and no longer removed from searches.
  • Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) is now available in the Title (/TI) field, the same as in the Abstract (/AB) and Basic Index (/BI) fields.

The following enhancements were made to the MEDLINE file segment of TOXCENTER:

  • The Source (/SO) field now contains the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) for print and the Electronic ISSN (E-ISSN) for electronic journals when available. Both print and electronic ISSNs are searchable and displayable in MEDLINE.
  • OLDMEDLINE records now include at least one MeSH heading in the Controlled Term (/CT) field.
  • A new search and display field, COMMENT (/CM), is now available and displays after the SO field in the ALL format. The CM field does not display in the BIB format. The terms from SEL CM with Document Number (/DN) appended allow you to find referenced PubMed IDs in TOXCENTER.

The reload of the MEDLINE file segment of TOXCENTER incorporates the annual update on December 11, 2005, to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) controlled vocabulary used for subject indexing and retrieval, which included:

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

6. WPIFV, WPIDS, WPINDEX, WPIX - IPC 8 CODES; MANUAL CODES FOR TRANSPORTATION PATENTS

IPC 8 (IPC R) in Derwent World Patents Index and Derwent WPI First View

Until the enhanced versions of WPINDEX, WPIX and WPIDS become available later in quarter one 2006, the IPC 8 codes will be dealt with as follows.

IPC Format:

The IPC 8 Main Groups, which contain 4 digits, will be truncated to three digits by removing the leading zero.

Example: A03K-0111-01 becomes A03K111-01.

If the Main Group is 4 digits long and the leading digit is not zero, this will be evaluated by Thomson Scientific analysts and dealt with on an individual basis.

IPC 8 Attributes:

IPC 7 codes are classed as Main, Secondary, Index or Additional IPCs. They are indexed online in each of these classes and also in the IPC super-index to allow searching of all IPCs regardless of this sub-classification. IPC 8 codes are no longer classed in this way but contain attributes stating whether they are invention or non-invention based. Until the enhanced version of WPINDEX, WPIX and WPIDS become available, the IPC 8 attributes will not be present in these files. The IPC 8 codes will be mapped to the nearest equivalent IPC 7 classification as follows and will also be included in the IPC super-index:

IPC 7 CLASS IPC 8 Attribute

Main First invention information

Second Later invention information

Additional Non-invention information / additional inform.

We recommend that you review search strategies containing IPCs to add in new classifications from IPC 8 to ensure you continue to receive the information you require.

Enhanced and reloaded WPINDEX, WPIX and WPIDS:

Once the enhanced and reloaded versions of WPINDEX, WPIX and WPIDS have become available later in quarter one 2006, IPC 8 will be available in full with all appropriate attributes included.

Manual Coding Now Applied to Transportation Patents

A new manual code hierarchy has been developed for Class Q in Derwent World Patents Index. The new codes cover all areas of transportation - including automotive, aerospace, railway, and shipping technologies - and are consistently applied to relevant patents from all of the countries currently covered in Derwent WPI. The addition of manual coding will improve recall and precision when searching Q classes, and should also enhance any subsequent data analysis.

For more information and examples visit http://scientific.thomson.com/ts/media/scpdf/transportation-q-codes.pdf

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.

7. IPC 8 ENHANCEMENTS AND THESAURUS IN EPFULL, FRANCEPAT, PATDPASPC, RUSSIAPAT

The thesaurus is available in the /IPC search and expand field, allowing you to view the definitions of IPC codes in their respective hierarchies. It also enables searching across a range of IPC codes.

A concise description of the functionality is provided when you enter HELP THES at an arrow prompt (=>) in one of the databases containing the IPC 1-8 thesaurus. The hierarchy or relationship codes are available with HELP RCO. For details of the IPC-related enhancements, including the addition of the IPC thesaurus, see HELP CHANGE in one of the databases.

The Database Summary Sheets are available in STNGUIDE and on the Web on our Database List.
