DATABASE NEWS

1. GBFULL - PATENT SPECIFICATIONS ADDED

With the recent addition of patent specifications to the GBFULL database, United Kingdom (GB) Patents Full Text, you now have one convenient source for full-text coverage of complete patent family information published in the UK.  Beginning with the November 29, 2008 update date, both the patent applications and the corresponding specifications form one database record.

To display the complete information for a database record, use display formats appended with .M (e.g., BIB.M, ALL.M).  Database records contain bibliographic data and full text for the description and claims.  An abstract accompanies about 85% of the applications.

Note: Text for these UK patent applications and specifications has been created by optical character recognition (OCR) software and may therefore contain misinterpreted characters or incomplete text.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and at:
http://www.stn-international.com/gbfull.html

2. INPADOCDB/INPAFMDB - NEW HANDBOOK

The new INPADOCDB/INPAFMDB Handbook is available at

3. MEDLINE AND LMEDLINE UPDATED WITH 2009 MESH VOCABULARY

MEDLINE and LMEDLINE are being updated with the 2009 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary and tree numbers from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).
Additional information is available at

4. PS - UPDATED WITH NEW ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS AND SYNTHESIS INFORMATION

PS (Pharmaceutical Substances)covers active pharmaceutical ingredients
(API) of significance. Accepted for the database are compounds approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration plus compounds with great commercial success or capability.

Entries for pharmaceutical compounds offer the most important substance identification data, trade information and formulations. Synthesis paths are described in the database for the vast majority of compounds. In many cases several different ways for relevant industrial preparations are given. For every compound a collection of relevant citations from the original literature - predominantly patents - is given.

Starting materials, intermediates and products of reaction schemes are all structure searchable. Reactants and products of a reaction step can be searched with one structure query. The preparations can be displayed as TIFF images.

Simultaneous left and right truncation is available in the basic index (/BI) and chemical name segment (/CNS) fields.

The file was enhanced with 51 new APIs and with updated synthesis information of 16 APIs. The file presently contains more 2,460 APIs launched from 1957 till today.

PS is produced by the renowned German science publisher Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, Germany.

The Database Summary Sheet is available in STNGuide and at:
http://www.stn-international.com/ps.html

5. TOXCENTER - MEDLINE SEGMENT UPDATED WITH 2009 MESH VOCABULARY

The 2009 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary and tree numbers from the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) are being added to the MEDLINE segment of Toxicology Center (TOZCENTER).

7. DERWENT WPI HAS BEEN ENHANCED WITH JAPANESE PATENT CLASSIFICATION DATA

Japanese Patent Classifications (FI-Terms) and FTERMs have been introduced in the DWPI database (files WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX) in December 2008. About 5.25 million Japanese patents in about 4.5 million DWPI documents have been equipped with current Japanese Classification data for 1966 to 2007.

TAKE NOTE

8. STN WEBSITE REDESIGNED AND RESTRUCTERED

FIZ Karlsruhe has redesigned and restructured its STN International website and has launched it in  December 2008 at www.stn-international.com .

The new site is organized differently, but the majority of the content from the former website has been retained. Because of the structural changes to the new website, the URL for most web pages has changed. The most frequently used pages from the former website have already been or will be redirected to the new site during the next few weeks. Therefore, for a short period of time the former website will be available in parallel at www.stn-international.de .

Bookmarks and links set by customers to less frequently used pages will be broken. However, the clear structure of the new website with its well arranged navigation bar is expected to minimize difficulties in locating information. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The web addresses for STN on the Web and STN Easy are not affected by the changes.

The new site design accommodates two major visitor groups:

  • customers who are looking for specific information or support
  • new visitors interested in, but not yet familiar with STN products and services

For customers, the new website provides direct access to the database online service via different user interfaces. The new website also offers extensive information material (topical news, database descriptions, workshop manuals, presentations, search tips, etc.) researchers may benefit from. The STN software products STN Express and STN AnaVist are available for download. There is also a current calendar of workshops and user meetings with the option to register online for these events.

Those who do not yet know STN International but are interested in the products and services it offers  benefit from a presentation of solutions for different target groups - information professionals, intellectual property professionals, researchers, and academic institutions. There is a brief introduction to the services and products offered by STN. More detailed information can be found by clicking the links to the sub-sections. Thus, new visitors of the website can already get an overview of their specific topic of interest before contacting the STN Service Center online or by phone.

9. INTRODUCING CAS - SCIENCE CONNECTIONS

You may have noticed articles on the CAS web site about melamine toxicity, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry...even fruit flies. The "CAS - Science Connections" series showcases the value of CAS databases at
