Elsevier BIOBASE is a bibliographic current awareness database providing comprehensive coverage of the entire spectrum of biological research worldwide. Coverage includes the following areas: applied microbiology, biotechnology, cancer research, cell & developmental biology, clinical chemistry, ecological & environmental sciences, endocrinology, genetics, immunology, infectious diseases, metabolism, molecular biology, neuroscience, plant and crop science, protein biochemistry, and toxicology. A strength of the database is its currency. Citations and abstracts are available online within 15 days of the receipt of the source material. A separate species dictionary for plant and ecological records is used to index records (available in field ORGN, Organism Name). Approximately 250,000 records are added each year, 80% of which contain an informative abstract. Elsevier BIOBASE is not only an electronic equivalent of Current Awareness in Biological Sciences (CABS), a well-established print product, but it contains some 100,000 additional items per year. Records are selected from over 1,700 international scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings.
